On October 22, 2024, Kastamonu University hosted the "Methodological Issues in Islamic Sciences" panel, organized by the Muhammed İhsan Oğuz Research and Application Center with the support of the Muhammed İhsan Oğuz Foundation. The event took place at the Sezai Karakoç Hall of the Central Library.
The opening speech was delivered by Prof. Dr. Mehmet Atalan, Dean of the Faculty of Theology at our university.
Prof. Dr. Atalan began by reflecting on the life of Muhammed İhsan Oğuz, highlighting his contributions to Islamic sciences. He emphasized the significance of such events for scholarly work and academic growth and expressed his gratitude to the Muhammed İhsan Oğuz Research and Application Center and the Muhammed İhsan Oğuz Foundation for their efforts in organizing the panel.
The session, moderated by Prof. Dr. Cemalettin Erdemci, Vice Rector of Siirt University and Faculty Member of the Faculty of Theology, featured diverse perspectives from various academics.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mehmet Uluütük from Bursa Technical University focused on the concepts of truth and methodology in the social sciences. Uluütük examined the impact of methodologies employed in the search for truth on social sciences, emphasizing the importance of determining the correct methods for the advancement of these fields.
Prof. Dr. Murat Demirkol, Dean of the Faculty of Theology at Ankara Yıldırım Beyazıt University, discussed the ongoing debates surrounding methodology in Islamic sciences, exploring how thought systems in Islamic philosophy were developed within certain methodological frameworks. Demirkol evaluated the development process of Islamic thought and how it should be approached in the modern era.
Finally, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Recep Özdirek from our university’s Faculty of Theology analyzed the methodology used in Muhammed İhsan Oğuz's book on Islamic jurisprudence. Özdirek explained the influence of Oğuz’s methods on Islamic law and fundamental Islamic sciences, discussing the applicability of these methodologies in today’s context.
