A project led by Research Assistant Çağatay Salum from Kastamonu University’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, titled "Investigation of the Effects of Geranium (Pelargonium graveolens) Essential Oil on Rumen Fermentation Using the Rumen Simulation Technique (RUSITEC)," has been awarded support under TÜBİTAK’s 1002-A Rapid Support Program. Following an evaluation by the Agriculture, Forestry, and Veterinary Research Support Group, the project was deemed eligible for funding.

The primary aim of the project is to examine the effects of geranium essential oil, known for its natural antimicrobial properties, on the rumen microorganisms found in the digestive systems of livestock. Using in vitro studies conducted with the rumen simulation technique (RUSITEC), the project will evaluate the impact of geranium oil on microbial fermentation. The findings are expected to provide valuable insights into both livestock productivity and ecological issues such as global warming.

If the project yields positive results, further steps will be taken toward developing a new natural feed additive that could serve as an alternative to antibiotics. The natural antimicrobial properties of products like geranium oil are anticipated to bring economic and ecological benefits to the livestock industry. The project, set to last 12 months, will be led by Research Assistant Çağatay Salum, with Prof. Dr. Hakan Öztürk serving as a consultant.

Our Rector, Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hamdi Topal, remarked that projects of this kind continuously increase the university’s scientific research capacity and elevate the reputation of both our university and the country in the global scientific community. He congratulated the faculty members involved in the project and wished them continued success.

The Rector also expressed his gratitude to the President of the Council of Higher Education, Prof. Dr. Erol Özvar, and its members for their support of high-quality and impactful research. He also thanked TÜBİTAK President Prof. Dr. Orhan Aydın for his encouraging approach to institutional research efforts.
