Kastamonu University continues to contribute to regional development with its R&D studies in Forestry and Nature Tourism. Finally, the antibacterial wood production method carried out by our University was registered by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TURKPATENT) and an important success was achieved.
Patent Achievements Continue in the Specialised Field of our University
Kastamonu University has been continuing its patent applications since 2020 within the scope of specialization studies in the field of Forestry and Nature Tourism. In this process, 1 patent application was made in 2020, 1 PCT and 1 utility model in 2021, 3 national patents and 1 PCT in 2022, and 6 patent applications in 2023. In 2024, 1 national patent and 1 PCT application were made, and the registration process for these applications started.
Finally, Kastamonu University Faculty of Forestry, Department of Forest Industry Engineering, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Osman Emre Özkan and Faculty of Forestry, Department of Forest Engineering, Faculty of Forestry, Dr. Assoc. The invention titled ‘Wood with Antibacterial Effect and Production Method for Use in Hygienically Sensitive Places’ developed by Prof. Dr. Kerim Güney was registered by TURKPATENT.
Innovative Solution for Natural Antibacterial Wood Production with Waste Plant Extracts
The patented invention is obtained by applying plant extracts (thyme, lavender, mint) with antibacterial properties to wood by impregnation method. The plant extracts used in the invention are obtained from plant pulps, which are considered waste after essential oil production. This method provides an economic advantage in terms of the utilization of waste material and offers safe use with its natural protective properties.
Safe and Natural Solution for Hygienic Areas: Patented Method in Antibacterial Wood Production
The most remarkable feature of the patented method is that it enables the production of antibacterial wood that can be used in hygienically sensitive areas. These materials can be safely preferred in areas of intensive use such as toy production, schools, hospitals, food transport and preparation areas, parks, and gardens.
Our Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hamdi Topal, who made evaluations about the patent registration, stated that this success is a great gain for both our University and our country. Our Rector also thanked Prof. Dr. Erol Özvar, President of the Council of Higher Education, and Prof. Dr. Muhammed Zeki Durak, President of TURKPATENT for their support to R&D studies, and congratulated Assoc. Prof. Dr. Osman Emre Özkan and Dr. Lecturer Kerim Güney who developed the invention. Prof. Dr. Osman Emre Özkan and Prof. Dr. Kerim Güney who created the invention.
