The causes of the damages caused by the earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş and affecting 11 provinces were turned into a book by academics.
Prof. Dr. Mahmut Bilgehan, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture, Department of Civil Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Architecture of our University, who worked in the Earthquake Research Group of the Ministry of National Defense after the Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes, conducted research in Hatay with the assignment of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, and was the coordinator of the project titled “Lessons Learned from the February 6, 2023, Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes and Our Country's Preparedness for New Earthquakes”, turned the problems and determinations into a book.
The book titled “February 6, 2023, Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes, Damage Causes and Lessons Learned”, edited by Prof. Dr. Mahmut Bilgehan and contributed by many academicians from Iskenderun Technical University, Yeditepe University, Harran University, especially our university, was published.
Prof. Dr. Mahmut Bilgehan stated that the February 6, 2023, Kahramanmaraş earthquakes are considered one of the biggest natural disasters in the world.
Emphasizing that the earthquakes caused widespread destruction and thousands of casualties in 11 provinces, Bilgehan said that deep pain was felt throughout Turkey. He said that the earthquakes show that the country needs to make more progress on earthquakes. Prof. Dr. Bilgehan stated that studies on earthquakes are of great importance and emphasized the importance of the book titled “6 February 2023 Kahramanmaraş Earthquakes, Causes of Damage and Lessons Learned”, which was inspired by a TÜBİTAK project on the 6 February Kahramanmaraş earthquakes. Bilgehan thanked the authors and colleagues who contributed to the preparation of the book and stated that this study will be useful for academicians, civil engineers, and engineering students.
He also added that he believes that the book will make an important contribution to understanding the causes of the damages in Kahramanmaraş earthquakes.
