Kastamonu University continues to maintain its success in the field of intellectual property with 9 patents/utility models and 5 designs registered by the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office in the first seven months of 2024. Research and development and project studies of universities turn into concrete value-added outputs with patents and designs, which are considered essential indicators of innovation performance.
Number of Registered Patents Increases
As one of the essential outputs of research, development, and project work, patents are considered critical parameters in measuring and monitoring the innovation performance of countries, companies, universities, and other technology-developing institutions.
In recent years, our University has continued to increase its efforts in intellectual property, such as information, training, academic interviews and evaluation of the patentability of project ideas. As a result of these studies covering various fields such as health, machinery, embedded systems, defence industry and medical, 3 patents and 3 designs were registered in 2022, 5 patents and 10 designs in 2023, 9 patents/utility models and 5 designs in 2024.
Featured Designs in the Specialization Area
More than 90% of the 18 designs registered so far consist of forestry projects, our University's specialization area. These designs, in which student-oriented projects and academic consultancy play a vital role, include urban furniture, seating units, wooden games and toys. The Patent Support Office at Kastamonu University Technology Transfer Office enables students who create innovative designs during their undergraduate studies to achieve such success.
Support from Corporate Offices is Important
Our Rector, Prof. Dr Ahmet Hamdi Topal, stated that our University had achieved significant success in recent years in ranking Turkey's patent champion universities published by Patent Effect. Stating that our University, which ranked 19th in Turkey with 14 patent applications in 2021, rose to 18th place with 15 patent applications in 2023, our Rector emphasized that patent/utility model applications gained momentum this year and stated that they prepared an FSMH portfolio to contribute to the commercialization of registered technologies.
Our Rector congratulated the students and academicians who participated in the invention activities and thanked the Patent Support Office for carrying out the process. He also thanked Prof. Dr M. Zeki Durak, President of the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, who encourages work in the field of intellectual property, and Prof. Dr Erol Özvar, President of the Council of Higher Education, who supports work in this field.
