Prof. Dr. Şükran Fazlıoğlu, one of the faculty members of Marmara University Faculty of Theology, Department of Arabic Language and Rhetoric, came together with the students at the event “What is the Use of Arabic Language An Account from Madrasa to Faculty.”
Prof. Dr. Mehmet Atalan, Dean of the Faculty of Theology, academic and administrative staff, and students attended the interview held at the Faculty of Theology Conference Hall on May 9, 2024.
Prof. Dr Şükran Fazlıoğlu, who started the program with the recitation of the Holy Quran, said in her speech that she tried to understand the Arabic language and Arabic teaching in her academic life and emphasized that it is important to carry the experiences of the past to the present in Arabic language teaching.
In her speech, Prof. Dr. Fazlıoğlu stated that there are some problems in Arabic language education in the Faculty of Theology and underlined that to solve these problems, it is necessary to understand the problem and analyze the curriculum correctly.
Prof. Dr. Fazlıoğlu mentioned that to understand the Arabic language, it is necessary to understand the entire curriculum and said that madrasas, which have an important place in this process, operate to prepare students for the existence and understanding of the Qur'an.
He said examining its curriculum in Arabic language teaching would be appropriate. In his speech, Prof. Dr Fazlıoğlu emphasized that the main purpose of teaching the Arabic language in madrasahs is that language is essential for a true understanding of religion and existence, that linguistic sciences are instrumental sciences that are taught for the study of higher sciences, and that useful sciences guide Shari'ah sciences.
Prof. Dr. Fazlıoğlu stated that she benefited from a wide variety of sources in language teaching and that the diversity of resources paved the way for forming a solid infrastructure. Stating that continuity is important in the teaching of Arabic in madrasas, Prof. Dr. Fazlıoğlu emphasized in his speech that the language was always included in the curriculum in Ottoman madrasas from the first period, that is, from the first step of a student to the madrasah until the end. This method can guide the learner in trying to learn the language.
Prof. Dr. Fazlıoğlu explained why Arabic is taught in faculties today to understand the Arabic text, understand the text and the literary structure formed around the main text, and draw conclusions from it.
