The opening ceremony of the "Turkish Historical Society Centennial Library" established in Kastamonu University Central Library was held with the participation of our Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hamdi Topal and Turkish Historical Society President Prof. Dr. Yüksel Özgen.

The "Centennial Library Project" initiated by the Turkish Historical Society (TTK) within the scope of the 100th anniversary of the Republic took its place in the Central Library of our University. The Centennial Library of the Turkish Historical Society, consisting of 1161 books in total, constitutes an important resource for academics, students and researchers.

The ceremony, which took place at the Central Library of our University on February 15, 2024, was attended by our Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hamdi Topal and Turkish Historical Society (TTK) President Prof. Dr. Yüksel Özgen, as well as many academics and students.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, our Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hamdi Topal stated that libraries, where the information needs of human beings are met, are a living source of information and the common memory of humanity, which can be transferred from generation to generation, containing many values.

Stating that the Central Library of our University has 71,535 printed books, 871 current magazines, 358,725 e-books, our Rector also stated that 310 thousand people benefit from the library annually. Stating that efforts to enrich the library collection continue every year, our Rector expressed that the 1161 books given to the library by the Turkish Historical Society will make a great contribution to our academics, students and researchers, and thanked Özgen, President of the Turkish Historical Society.

Civilization is built through libraries

Speaking after the Rector, Prof. Dr. Yüksel, President of the Turkish Historical Society, said that within the scope of the project implemented for the 100th anniversary of the Republic, they have carried out very important activities in many universities across Turkey in the fields of history, literature and philosophy in order to reveal Turkey's 100-year accumulation.

In his speech, Prof. Dr. Özgen touched upon the importance of libraries and emphasized that science, scientists and libraries should be given importance for the development of countries.  Prof. Dr. Özgen underlined that countries develop when they attach importance to science, scientists, art and libraries, and when they move away from these elements, their welfare level decreases and they experience economic and social problems.

Providing information about the "Turkish Historical Society Centennial Library" project, Prof. Dr. Özgen continued his words as follows: "In order to commemorate the 100th anniversary of our Republic, we have initiated a project to open a Turkish Historical Society Centennial Library consisting of our institution's publications in the libraries of all universities in Turkey. As you know, social sciences are indispensable for a country. In fact, as long as we do not make the necessary breakthrough in the field of social sciences, we face serious problems in maintaining our economic independence, cultural independence and political independence. Maybe the number may seem small, but we started such a project in order to raise awareness and draw attention to history and the 100th anniversary. I would like to thank our Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hamdi Topal and you for hosting this project. I hope that the project will contribute to the upbringing of our youth and the preparation of our youth for the future."

The ceremony ended with the presentation of a certificate of appreciation to Prof. Dr. Yüksel Özgen, President of the Turkish Historical Society, by our Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hamdi Topal and the ribbon cutting. A souvenir photo was taken after the opening.
