Under the leadership of Dr. Instructor Member Canan Kaş from the Department of Midwifery at Kastamonu University Faculty of Health Sciences and Specialist Nurse Elmas Yılmaz, Intensive Care Coordinator at Kastamonu Training and Research Hospital, the "1st Symposium on Current Approaches in Intensive Care" was organized in collaboration with the Turkish Nurses Association, Kastamonu University, Provincial Health Directorate, and Kastamonu Training and Research Hospital.The symposium was held on May 5, 2025, in the Sezai Karakoç Conference Hall of the Central Library at Kastamonu University.
The symposium was attended by Prof. Dr. Abdulkadir Tuna, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Pakize Çetin, Director of Health Care Services at Kastamonu Training and Research Hospital, Aycan Kelez Yayık, Vice President of the Turkish Intensive Care Nurses Association and Responsible Nurse of the Sadi Sun Intensive Care Unit at Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty, Expert Nurse, board members from Marmara University, Dr. H. Banu Katran and Dr. Burcu Dedeoğlu Demir from Istanbul Arel University, academic staff from Kastamonu University, administrators and intensive care doctors and nurses from Kastamonu Training and Research Hospital, nurses from İnebolu State Hospital, the Director of Nursing Services and nurses from Karabük MEDİKAR Hospital, nurses from Zonguldak Training and Research Hospital, and students from the Faculty of Health Sciences.
The symposium was moderated by Nurse Nuriye Nejla Akçaoğlu, the Quality Management Director at Kastamonu Education and Research Hospital. The program began with opening speeches by the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Prof. Dr. Abdulkadir Tuna, the Director of Health Care Services, Nurse Saide Pakize Çetin; and the Vice President of the Turkish Intensive Care Nurses Association, Specialist Nurse Aycan Kelez Yayık.
After the opening speeches, the first panel, titled "Prevention and Management of Intensive Care Infections" was held. The session chairs of the panel were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayşe Yılmaz and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Filiz Özel Çakır. In this session, Dr. Instructor Canan Kaş presented on "Prevention and Control of Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia (VAP)," Specialist Nurse Elmas Yılmaz on "Prevention and Control of Intravenous Catheter Infections," and Nurse Hafize Özdemir on "Prevention and Control of Urinary Catheter Infections."
The second panel, titled "Comfort in Intensive Care," was chaired by Prof. Dr. Zahide Doğanay and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Havva Kaçan.In this session, Specialist Nurse Aycan Kelez Yayık shared information on "Pain and Sedation Management, Delirium Management, and the ABCDEF Care Bundle," while Nurse Esra Solak discussed "Early Mobilization in Critically Ill Patients."
The third panel, titled "Evidence-Based Practices in Intensive Care," was chaired by Dr. Faculty Member Canan Kaş and Specialist Nurse Elmas Yılmaz. In the panel, Dr. Faculty Member H. Banu Katran addressed the participants with her presentations titled "Evidence-Based Practices in Enteral Nutrition Management" and "Common Misconceptions in Intensive Care," while Dr. Faculty Member Burcu Dedeoğlu Demir presented on "Evidence-Based Practices in Preventing Pressure Injuries."
The symposium continued with a short slideshow prepared by Specialist Nurse Elmas Yılmaz and Education Nurse Asuman Ahçıoğlu Demirci. Then, a discussion was held where the intensive care unit charge nurses Mesut Özsoy, Oya Karaalioğlu, Sultan Türkmen Yaralı, and Hafize Özdemir shared their professional experiences.
The program concluded with the presentation of certificates of appreciation.
