The "Wooden Ship Model Making Workshop," organized as part of the cultural heritage awareness activities conducted within Kastamonu University, was successfully completed.
Hosted by the Kastamonu University Wood Culture Application and Research Center, in collaboration with AKAUM, Kastamonu Technopark Inc., TTO Inc., the Faculty of Forestry, and the Specialization Coordination, this special event conducted within the scope of the Wooden Yacht Technology course provided students with a unique experience of maritime history and traditional woodworking.
Both theoretical and practical instruction on the history of wooden ship modeling, construction methods, and detailed scaling principles were given in the workshop, which was led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Osman Emre Özkan from our university, Asst. Prof. Dr. Recep Aykan from Sinop University, and wooden ship model craftsman Osman Arslan and Serdar Engin.
Participants had the opportunity to experience different stages of construction according to the scaled plans of historical ship models while also gaining knowledge about the aesthetic and technical possibilities of wood. At the event, it was emphasized that ship model making is not just a hobby or an art form but also a multidisciplinary endeavor requiring patience, attention, historical knowledge, and manual skills.
Director of AKAUM, Assist. Prof.Dr. Mehmet Karamanoğlu stated that such events are essential for the revival of traditional handicrafts, the dissemination of woodworking skills, and the preservation of cultural heritage. Additionally, it was stated that our University and the center plan to organize new workshops and courses on similar themes in the upcoming period.
