A conference titled "Data-Based Strategic Management in Higher Education and Overview of Kastamonu University" was held at the Central Library Sezai Karakoç Hall on Thursday, January 25, 2024, with the participation of Middle East Technical University (METU) Faculty Member Corporate Big Data Management Coordinator Prof. Dr. Adem Kalınlı.
Our Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hamdi Topal, Vice Rectors Prof. Dr. Mehmet Atalan, Prof. Dr. Kasım Yenigün, Prof. Dr. Ömer Küçük, METU Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Adem Kalınlı and many academic and administrative staff attended the conference.
Speaking at the conference, METU Corporate Big Data Management Coordinator Prof. Dr. Adem Kalınlı shared his knowledge on topics such as University Ranking Systems, Status of Universities in Turkey, New Higher Education System and Strategic Management in Higher Education, Performance Management in Higher Education (AVESIS and APSIS Example Based on Balanced Scorecard Model), Research University Performance Indicators, Data Management and R&D Management in Higher Education, Open Archive and Open Science, Evaluations for Kastamonu University, Examples of Successful Practices in Higher Education Institutions.
"Knowledge must be transformed into added value"
In his presentation, Prof. Dr. Kalınlı said that the information obtained today is renewed very quickly and underlined that scientific knowledge should be transformed into added value. Stating that in the process of transforming knowledge into added value, both access to information and the resources of the institution should be used correctly, Prof. Dr. Kalınlı emphasized that knowledge-oriented experiences should be shared with everyone and should be visible.
"400 Million TL support from the State to the Universities"
Prof. Dr. Adem Kalınlı, who touched on topics such as the importance of data management in higher education institutions, strategic action plan and institutional development in his presentation, said that improving quality and productivity in higher education has been on the agenda of many countries for many years, as the contribution of universities to the development of countries is of vital importance. For this reason, Prof. Dr. Kalınlı stated that the state also pursues policies to improve university education, and that the state provided 400 million TL support in 2024 to support research universities.
"Internationalization is a must"
Pointing out that effective policies and strategies based on data should be prepared in order for higher education institutions to be positioned among the leading universities internationally in order to meet expectations and demonstrate high performance, Prof. Dr. Kalın underlined that universities in Europe and America started policies based on data collection and processing in the 1800s, which is a tradition that has survived to the present day. Prof. Dr. Kalınlı reminded that the university administration should guide the academics in order to make their work visible and emphasized that academic staff should use a system that is accountable to the university administration about their work throughout the year.
Kastamonu University's achievements are impressive
Pointing out that Kastamonu University has risen dramatically in world rankings, Prof. Dr. Kalınlı emphasized the importance of being a specialized university in the field of Forestry and Nature Tourism and stated that Kastamonu University has a high potential and the steps to be taken for this. Stating that as a Regional Development-oriented University, it has received 20 Million TL state support from the state, Prof. Dr. Kalınlı underlined that Kastamonu University is above the average in academic studies and citations per doctoral faculty member and that our university will rise in national and international rankings with the increase in the number of projects to be realized within the framework of international cooperation, the increase in the number of students and publications in doctoral education. Stating that many people, including students, families and employers, pay attention to where the school they study is in national and world rankings, Prof. Dr. Kalınlı emphasized that it is important for education and the work of educators to be visible in a constantly changing world.
Our Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hamdi Topal, who took the floor after Prof. Dr. Adem Kalınlı at the end of the program, thanked Prof. Dr. Kalınlı for helping to discover the potential we have as Kastamonu University and stated that everyone has a job to make our University more visible in the national and international arena. Our Rector also said that the policies to be followed for the visibility of the studies will be structured quickly.
The conference ended with the presentation of a certificate of appreciation and a gift to Prof. Dr. Adem Kalınlı by our Rector Prof. Dr. Ahmet Hamdi Topal and a photo shoot.
